If you LOVE good coffee and fun, unique shops ...this is a MUST! This may be one of the coolest coffee shops I've seen-an old converted warehouse with a wooden plank wall....yes please!!! I enjoyed a vanilla latte...it was smooth, light and not too sweet.

The Black Owl is a small cafe in downtown Kalamazoo and from the moment I stepped into the cafe I loved it. The space is invitingly calm and shaded most of the day with a window allowing light to come in from the west. The Kalamazoo Coffee Company locally roasts up one mean bean and that's what they brew at The Black Owl. Welcome to the world of options fresh press, pour overs, lattes and more, you pick your poison here! Most of the time, I go for the simple and affordable french press, but the lattes are to die for. If you're anything like me, coffee and tea runs through your body at light speed. Don't let their dark bathroom scare you, perhaps quirk-ishly, it's one of my favorite spots in the entire cafe. It's full of little unique trinkets and art that keeps you entertained during your many bathroom breaks. A quick tip- Note their hours as they are slightly select, but do-able.

First time here...LOVE this place! Cute and cozy! Staff is super friendly! It's very quiet in here. The staff talk with a soft voice even. The music is super chill. This is the cutest coffee shop ever! Very rustic. They do have food as well. Menu isn't extensive but it works! Chili was excellent. The place is small, but not crowded. I didn't check the hours out, but my friend who is a frequent customer here complained to me that the hours are odd. So check the hours before you come!

I have tried this place in the past but didn't pay much attention until it recently won the title of best coffee shop in Michigan. The atmosphere is great. The place is a little dark but is full of personality. The space isn't large, so you may feel a bit intrusive as you wait in line right next to patrons who are sitting at tables. When mLive reviewed Black Owl for the coffee shop contest, they listed the Chai Latte as the must try beverage. I have tried it a couple times in the past month and I'm in love. The taste is fantastic and the texture is so unique. What am I drinking?!?! Is this even a liquid? A delicious foam? Some other new state of matter that Black Owl invented? I don't care. I just want to keep drinking it. Every day. Forever.

Love this place! Multiple coffees and brewing techniques - one of them is like watching a chemistry experiment! Funky but comfortable interior makes it a relaxing and non-pretentious place to have a high end cup of coffee.

Had a great time coming in! Had a full flavor latte, a con miel, and a syphon using their light roast, Mexican Chiapas. All very good. Interior was nice and welcoming. I do wish they used better quality milk. But, regardless the baristas there frothed the milk very well and it tasted very good. Definitely coming back!

Finally! I made it over to the famous Black Owl Cafe! I had to see if it lived up to all of the hype. And to be honest, for the most part, it does. First off, the decor is hipster/frontier/chic (i just made that up). Lots of old wood and vintage looking accouterments. Very cozy and comfortable vibe. Which is a good thing considering how very small the space is. Apparently, previously they also used an upstairs space but for some reason that is unavailable now. Didn't really detract from the experience though. The barista was friendly & professional. Service was prompt but un-intrusive, as it should be in this type of establishment. I ordered a chai latte. I've had them at several coffee spots all over the Kalamazoo area and I have to say, i believe this one was the best I've had to date! Rich, not overly sugary with a thick creamy foam on top. Perfection in a mug. Overall it was a very good experience. I really can't think of anything negative, other than the size. I mean if they get more than 10 folks in there, it's standing room only! But if you are looking for a cozy, out of the way spot with great coffee, decor, and service... I'd check them out. Bonus - Don't leave without checking out the unisex bathroom! It's an experience all by itself lol

My review will be short, simple and to the point. I love this place. The atmosphere is so unique. You will notice something different on the walls every time you come. Its old school and steam punk...I just am fascinated with the décor. The coffee is top notch. Different brewing options. Great selection of loose leaf teas. Staff is friendly.

Our group tried a Guatemalan coffee brewed four different ways, and it was a fun experience. I was expecting only to like the French Press (which is my typical brewing method), but was pleased to discover that each brew had unique enjoyable characteristics. Definitely worth the trip if you're in town.

Holy shit! Holy shit! Holy shit! Black owl started serving food again! Now if we could only get them to offer extended hours.

In terms of the ambiance at Black Owl I'd say this is one of the trendiest spots in Kalamazoo to get a cup of coffee. The decor is rustic and reminds me of a cozy cabin in Northern Michigan. Also, their bathroom is AWESOME. Sounds silly but seriously, check it out. Their menu is incredible and they offer a wide variety of coffees, teas, and sodas. Their pizza is delicious but I've heard their other food is just as great. The only thing this place is lacking is space and longer hours.

One of the things that I love, like many others do as well, is a great cup coffee. My lust for the stuff is never really filled at other coffee shops in town, though. Usually I would just stick to using my french press, at home, and cry because I don't have anyone to drink this amazing coffee with. Now that Black Owl is here, my eyes are the driest they've been for years. I'm finally able to drink really great brewed coffee and espresso drinks with my friends, and introduce them to the wonderful world of coffee. The atmosphere is really quaint, the baristas are nice and knowledgeable, and the second level is really a wonderful tragedy, as it is not being used to its full potential. Thank you Black Owl Cafe.

It's a coffee shop for coffee lovers. You can have it your way here. The chemex brew method produces my favorite cup of coffee. Feel free to ask questions about the coffee and methods. They know their stuff. I can't say the same about many other chains in the area.

So, this is my second time here, and my second mediocre experience. I really, really want to like this place as is has so much potential. It looks and feels like everything a really good coffee shop should look and feel like. Excellent repurposed and eclectic hipster decorating, out of the way and tricky to find location, very low key ambiance, and trendy alt music that no one outside of the bands immediate friends and family has ever heard. It is trying really hard to pull off a good third wave coffee in-house roasting/brewing experience. The first time we came here we did so for breakfast. The food was good, and well priced, and we shared a " Chemex for two". We really enjoyed the visit and it was a nice way to start the day. I sit here now on my second visit, and once again, despite all the potential; they are just not living up to it. The biggest issue is the coffee (as it should be the number one priority) just isn't pulling its weight. They roast in house, but there is never a date the coffee was roasted on. If you are going to put on all the trappings of a good coffee house, you need to do better than a "best of used by" date on the package and uncertainty by the staff as to when it was actually roasted. This is ESPECIALLY important on the beans you are using/selling at the shop. The 16oz. Chemex I got was fairly smooth, but over extracted, probably due to the sloppy way it was made. From the looks of it they are controlling water temp (199 deg.), measuring their beans, but not controlling water amount by anything other than eye. The pour was way too fast and not controlled. The entire reason for the fancy pouring kettles is to be able to positively control the pour. If you're not going to use them this way you might as well dump it in with a cup and save the cost... I'm not trying to be overly harsh here as I will definately visit again, it's just disappointing that there is so much potential here that could be realized with just a few tweaks on the coffee side.

Kalamazoo Coffee Company's comfy and shadowy cafe, dark and rich as the coffee it brews. Not as crowded as some other coffee houses 'round town. Decor is woodsy and whimsical. I second the previous comment about the awesome bathroom decor.. (weird though it sounds). I don't go often as I'm from out of town but the service has always been very polite. I love their Filbert Hills Hazelnut blend of coffee.

Absolutely perfect Coffee House in a great building. Take the time for a pour over and enjoy the atmosphere.

By far best coffee shop in town!! Excellent customer service and atmosphere. There were many ways to have your coffee prepared. I went with the Chai Latte and it by far exceeded my expectations. I will be coming back!!

i LOOOVE this coffee!!!!! You can't go wrong when you buy this coffee...promise! My personal favorite with the Maple Bacon, but just bought the pumpkin spice and I think will be a close contender. If you are not able to visit the Black Owl cafe, do not worry! You can find their delicious coffee at several local stores in Kalamazoo. Sawall's always has a great selection!

LOVE their homemade chai tea lattes! Order it with almond milk! Seriously. You can't go back to other chais after this. Beyond the great tea/coffee/food, you'll LOVE the ambiance -- it's a bit rustic/chic French! You can even join their spoon club, where you get a customized spoon that hangs in the cafe for everyone to see and for you to use with your coffee and tea! Plus, the owner Darren is awesome and has lots of great energy! :)

Otherwise known as the Black Owl, this coffee joint serves up pretty decent coffee. For 2$ I got my 18 ounce travel cup filled from their self serve station. I had to ask for cream or milk which in a coffee house is a gigantic oversight, but they did have raw sugar. The staff was ultra friendly and offered us pre-lunch sandwiches at 10:30 am. We had pastries as we knew they were from the Victorian Bakery and all scratch made. Mr. MVP had a mocha, which he said was bitter. My guess is they use whole bittersweet chocolate and the bitterness comes from that. The young lady who made his mocha crafted his likeness in the foamy milk. Very cool :) The inside is very hipster, but incredibly dark. We sat outside on the deck which was very pleasant. We'll go back and try eating lunch at Black Owl soon!

I've not seen a place that knows so much about coffee. Found out that light roast coffee has slightly more caffeine than dark roast. They have several ways of making coffee. The syphin (spelling I'm sure is wrong) coffee is fun to watch. It's rreeeeeallllyyy hot but it's just like breaking bad. Cool little place.

Visited this place 2 years ago when my daughter was at WMU. Since then have been buying only their coffee and having it sent to CA because it is the BEST coffee i have ever had and all I will drink now!

I practically live at Black Owl. I am there about every other day. They have amazing (and affordable) coffee. Their food (especially the house-made pizza) is excellent. The people who work there are really great, and the atmosphere is far funkier than anything else in Kalamazoo. In the warm weather they now have a nice porch and some tables where you can sit in the shade and enjoy your coffee. All of their fantastic baked goods are from The Victorian Bakery, a Kalamazoo favorite. At the end if the day they are still a coffee shop, and they do it amazingly well. I have seldom had a more flavorful, less bitter espresso.

The coolest spot in Kalamazoo. It's warm and inviting with good bakery and beverages. It's small but every inch was designed and decorated with creative care.

We love this place! Great atmosphere, delicious coffee/tea. But food is sometimes lacking. My friend got the eggplant burger today and it was thoroughly unappetizing. I don't think they have a real menu for food which is odd. So ask about exactly what you're getting.

Very Friendly personable service. The gentleman who took our order, was engaging and very patient. I got the Spicy Chai tea Latte. I always try Chai as many places as I can. Their blend was not in house, but it wasn't bad. Nothing amazing though. The milk was steamed well- a good amount of foam. Not much seating. Nice location- right on the corner across from Bell's (another venue in Kalamazoo) This place is owned by the same owner of The Strutt. Thumbs up.

Have you ever wanted to see a siphon in action then this is your place. Coffee is great, tons of brewing style selections. Very neat, intimate space. The food is pretty good too.

New unique cafe downtown Kzoo. Locally roasted small batch coffee. Brew methods from around the world at reasonable prices. Owner has customized this small place to give a nice relaxed atmosphere. Food menu includes baked goods as well as sandwiches etc. Excellent service and overall an enjoyable place to relax and enjoy a coffee.

First off, a very cool building and atmosphere. Love the decor. My cappuccino was one of the best I've had in town to date, and I will defiantly just try the espresso next time.

In a world with too many coffee shops, this one rocks. I actually always get the tea and there is an amazing assortment. The rice pudding is delish.

The renovations on this old warehouse make it a treat to enjoy a really great cup of coffee. This is the way a coffee house should be setup. Lots of the old decor fits into the new setup. The coffee was well prepared. A great single pour, but they offer many different methods - pour over, French press, drip. Etc. you're not getting a stake cup of coffee out of an air pot. I had the dark roast Sumatra in a single pour over along with a tasty backpacker scramble. A little egg with bacon and veggies. Definitely a great atmosphere made better by a very knowledgable staff and friendly. I observed the barista help a genteel lady following me in line - she didn't really like strong coffee - he helped her right into a light roast nicely prepared so she would enjoy it. Glad he helped me find my dark roast but had no snooty attitude about helping a non coffee drinker enjoy a delightful cup of coffee.

I'm part of the surge that has inundated Black Owl after word about this spot got out to the masses. As the MLive article pointed out, it is a really cool interior, though the 1st floor space is a bit small for its newfound fame. There are stairs that would seem to go up to more space, but there was a curtain blocking my view upstairs and I didn't feel like exploring/possibly intruding. One of these days I'll get the courage to ask what's up there. Despite the influx of coffee novices like me, the baristas have been nothing but gracious, patient and eager to share their passion for their craft. The first time I went, I received a several minute tutorial on all of the interesting options you have for getting a cup of drip coffee. Some of the techniques border on mad scientist, with arcane-looking contraptions that are apparently designed for optimum flavor extraction. My last visit brought me in on a Saturday morning. I saw some breakfasts walk by me and they looked LEGIT. That is for sure on my list for next time. Having said that, I also saw someone standing and eating their grilled PB&J because all the seats were taken on an understandably busy morning. Will it be possible for Black Owl to grow without losing its charm? I sure hope so, though maybe the hipsters who knew about Black Owl before it was cool will just hope I retreat back to Biggby.

This is my Kalamazoo favorite cafe/coffee house. I have been coming here since it opened, when they had bands upstairs. The upstairs didn't meet the city code. For one it didn't have a back exit. I miss the brunches they used to have. I thought the food was actually good. They even had gluten free pizza and gluten free sandwiches. And NOW, starting this weekend March 28 they are bringing back brunch. I hope it is good and successful. Everybody knows they have the best coffee especially since we just voted it the best. Each cup is ground and brewed to order. And the old warehouse, could it BE any more hipster and fun? The art, am I allowed to say I like my picture? If you have not been here you will not be disappointed.

  • Bonnie S.

The coffeehouse is super cute! And there are so many ways that you can choose how your coffee can be made and every cup is grounded at the time of order. This converted old warehouse turned coffee shop is as hipster as it gets! The flavored that I got was too sweet for my taste but if I'm ever in Kalamazoo again I'll know better and order something not sweetened. Great place overall!
